How the Calculation Works
The MET (metabolic equivalent) method estimates how many calories a given activity burns per minute. One MET is your resting metabolic rate — roughly 1 kcal per kg of body weight per hour. A restorative activity with a MET of 2.5 makes your body work 2.5 times harder than sitting quietly. The calculator multiplies the activity's MET value by your weight in kilograms, converts the result into a per-minute calorie burn, then multiplies by the number of minutes you exercise.
The per-minute result comes from oxygen-consumption research: every MET corresponds to about 3.5 ml of oxygen consumed per kilogram per minute, and each liter of oxygen used releases about 5 kcal. This is why the formula works for all body sizes — heavier people burn more because moving more mass takes more energy.

The calculator uses two equations. First, calories per minute = (MET × 3.5 × weight in kg) ÷ 200. The 3.5 is the oxygen cost of one MET, and 200 converts liters of oxygen into kilocalories per minute. Second, total calories = calories per minute × duration in minutes.
