The Formula Explained

MET stands for metabolic equivalent of task. One MET is roughly the energy your body uses while sitting at rest, which is about 1 kcal per kilogram of body weight per hour. Exercising at 7.5 METs means you are burning energy 7.5 times faster than at rest.

The calorie estimate is:

Calories = MET × weight (kg) × duration (hours)

Because the formula scales linearly with body weight, a heavier person burns more calories than a lighter person at the same pace and duration. It also scales with time, so a 90-minute session burns 1.5 times the calories of a 60-minute session at the same intensity.
