How It Works

The calculator uses average fat values for each ingredient, based largely on the USDA FoodData Central database. For each ingredient, the fat contribution is:

Ingredient fat (g) = ingredient weight (g) × fat per 100 g ÷ 100

Once every ingredient has been added, the calculator divides the total fat by the cooked batch weight:

Fat per 100 g = total batch fat (g) ÷ cooked batch weight (g) × 100

Typical values used here are about 16 g fat per 100 g for cooked corned beef brisket, 33 g for cheddar, 81 g for butter, 99–100 g for vegetable oil, 9.5 g for whole eggs, and 0.1 g for potatoes and onions. Because vegetables are nearly fat-free, the oil, butter, cheese, and meat almost always decide the final fat content.

Worked Examples

Classic corned beef hash: 400 g potatoes, 250 g corned beef, 100 g onion, 20 g butter, cooked batch weight 720 g.

  • Potatoes: 400 × 0.1 ÷ 100 = 0.4 g fat
  • Corned beef: 250 × 16 ÷ 100 = 40.0 g fat

Total fat = 56.7 g. Fat per 100 g = 56.7 ÷ 720 × 100 ≈ 7.9 g. A 180 g serving contains about 14.2 g fat.

Compare that with a vegetarian hash made from 600 g potatoes, 120 g onion, 25 g oil, and 80 g cheddar. Total fat is roughly 35.5 g, and over an 800 g cooked batch that is about 4.4 g per 100 g. Small changes in butter or cheese create big differences, so weighing ingredients is worth the effort.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using raw instead of cooked batch weight. Hash releases water while it cooks, so a cooked batch can weigh noticeably less than the raw ingredients. Weigh the finished hash before serving; otherwise, fat per 100 g will look lower than it really is.

Forgetting the cooking fat. Oil, butter, or bacon drippings stay in the dish. Even a quick swirl of oil adds several grams of fat to the whole batch and should be counted.
