How It Works

Worked Examples
Example 1 — Honey-glazed holiday slice. You eat a 3 oz slice of honey-glazed ham. First convert the portion: 3 × 28.3495 ≈ 85 g. Then multiply: 85 × 9.0 ÷ 100 = 7.7 g of sugar. That is roughly 1.8 teaspoons, about 31 calories from sugar, and 15% of the 50 g daily added-sugar reference — a similar sugar load to one and a half sugar cubes.
Example 2 — Brown sugar cured roast. You serve yourself 150 g of brown sugar cured ham. Sugar = 150 × 4.5 ÷ 100 = 6.75 g, or about 6.8 g. Common Questions
Is this total sugar or added sugar? The calculator uses the Total Sugars line from nutrition labels, which includes both naturally occurring sugar and added sugar. Fresh ham contains almost no naturally occurring sugar, so nearly all the sugar in a glazed or cured ham is added during processing.
Why 50 g per day? The 50 g figure is the FDA Daily Value for added sugars, used on Nutrition Facts labels to help consumers gauge how a serving fits into a 2,000-calorie daily diet. If your personal target is different — for example 25 g on a low-sugar plan — you can divide your sugar grams by your own target instead.
